Devon and Cornwall Food Action is a registered charity that was founded in 2010. With three hubs in Plymouth, Exeter and Cornwall, the charity has so far saved 80 community groups across Devon and Cornwall with over £400,000 worth of food, this equates to over 145 tonnes of food that would have otherwise gone to landfill and carbon emissions saving of almost 70 tonnes. Devon and Cornwall Food Action intercepts 'in-date' food that is destined for landfill and 'recycles' it to vulnerable communities in an attempt to tackle food poverty and prevent food waste. They work with supermarkets and other food suppliers to take surplus food that would normally go to waste and redistribute it to local charities, CIC's and Community Groups, providing people in need with access to healthy food and in turn improve their lifestyles.
Their aim is to help these groups support individuals, families and communities who they have identified would benefit from support in the way of food. Some of their food donations are used directly by families or individuals, however, some of their benefactors use the food to create meals that they distribute via soup runs and community cafes. Some of their benefactors include All Nations Church, Salvation Army, Devonport Life Cafe, Befriending and Wicketz and through these organisations they help feed over 5000 people in Plymouth each month. They currently work with 40 suppliers including Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Bidvest, KFC, Tamar Foods and Bay Tree to support an estimated 1660 individuals.
Their aim is to intercept food supplies that would otherwise be wasted and issue them to charitable organisations that feed the disadvantaged in our communities. With their primary aim of helping individuals in need and tackling food poverty they also save on landfill space, landfill tax and CO2 emissions. They currently have around 100 volunteers but are always more than happy to welcome more, if you are interested please visit their Local Giving and Facebook pages for more information.
